Common Questions

How do I play on one iPad?

You can play on a single iPad for 2 to 6 players or practice on your own. It's free and always will be.

What is the Daily Tournament?

Every day, you receive the same 86 letters. You have one go at the puzzle, and the clock is running.

How is ranking determined?

We rank by points per minute. A careful 300 can beat a hurried 400. Quitting early doesn't count against anyone else's ranking.

What about Relaxed mode?

Relaxed mode removes the clock and the swap penalty. It's for when you'd rather think than race.

Is my data stored on the server?

All's Fair keeps almost everything on your iPad. Your name, settings, themes, and history never leave the device.

Which two-letter words can I play?

All's Fair accepts 124 of them:
AA AB AD AE AG AH AI AL AM AN AR AS AT AW AX AY BA BE BI BO BY CH DA DE DI DO EA ED EE EF EH EL EM EN ER ES ET EW EX FA FE FY GI GO GU HA HE HI HM HO ID IF IN IO IS IT JA JO KA KI KO KY LA LI LO MA ME MI MM MO MU MY NA NE NO NU NY OB OD OE OF OH OI OK OM ON OO OP OR OS OU OW OX OY PA PE PI PO QI RE SH SI SO ST TA TE TI TO UH UM UN UP UR US UT WE WO XI XU YA YE YO ZA ZO

How does a word get onto the list?

Two independent dictionaries have to agree it is a word — or, in a small number of recorded cases, one dictionary plus a deliberate decision by us.

All's Fair is built from three openly licensed sources: a large spelling database, a word-game reference list, and an academic lexical database. Almost every word on the list was confirmed by at least two of them.

The exceptions are a handful of short words that appear in only one source but that experienced players expect to be able to play — ZA and ZO among them. We add those by hand, one at a time, and write down why. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend to a rule we don't actually follow.

Spelling variants are handled separately: once a word is confirmed, its other spelling counts as the same word.

Are swear words playable?

Yes, mild swear words (profanities). Strong profanities have been removed from the playable word list.
